Topic/Skill: Writing Letters
Feedback provided to tutee: I had the tutee write me a letter as homework. As we went through the letter together, I helped him to find the correct answers. I told him that when he explains what he wants to say verbally, he says everything right. So, as homework I told him to write at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes. I do not want him to think about being perfect when he writes and instead to just write how he would speak.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned a lot in this session. Again, I surprised myself with how quickly I can come up with ways to remember writing techniques and ways to remember punctuation. Sulaiman's english is very good but he thinks too much when he is writing. Every time that I asked him to explain a sentence, he phrases it exactly how it should be written and instead when he writes he begins to question himself and think more about the grammar and correct tense. I learned this very quickly just by leading him to the answers. This session I did not give him any answers that he did not come to himself. Also, I taught him what hyphens are and what they are used for. However, I told him not to worry about using them until he begins writing higher level academic papers.
