My class observation (with Ms McHarek) began with my late arrival as due to a scheduling error, I had to leave one of my own classes early to make this one. Nonetheless I entered, took my seat and quickly began to scribble down everything I could see and/or hear. The first thing I noticed (and knew before entering) was the fact that this was a listening class. Second I noticed the instructor had separated the board into sections as well as written down objectives on the board. She had vocabulary on the board that she would constantly add to, but also wanted the class to define from context. Finally she walked the room and made sure students paid full attention as well as took notes. Once done listening, she asked some comprehension questions and then split the class into groups to have a short discussion followed by a few more questions. She had the groups define the vocab words on the board as well. After reconvening the class, she went over the answers and definitions followed by finishing the listening material. The class ended shortly after some final discussion questions. I stayed shortly after to discuss the class with her. I thought it was really good how she incorporated American history of Cajun people in the activity. The material itself was very well produced too, almost tailor made for English learners. She elaborated that a former EFL teacher produced the videos, specifically for learners. I also commented on how she had the students give definitions from context, it gave them something extra to listen for in the text. Overall, the class was very well done.
