Evan- TS#6 (Aziz)
This would be the last time I would meet with Aziz, he had some problems at home and we ran into communication errors. Additionally, meeting with him had become a bit of a toss up, he would not show up to our sessions, and I needed the time in my schedule. My one regret in this regard, I should have formally contacted him in respect to my withdrawal as his tutor. For lack of a better term, I ghosted him. Though in all transparency, he did not contact me any further regarding our tutoring, and still has not.
Regardless, I was equally unprepared for this lesson. Aziz is very goal oriented in his learning of English, he wants to communicate and participate in classes here at FSU. That being said, he was keen on knowing how he could best do this, what things he needs to do, or if his professors can understand him. I told him that a majority of engaging in a classroom is actively listening, not speaking, and that a good portion of interaction with professors is often over e-mail. He asked bluntly if I believed him to be capable enough of courses here, and I believe so. It is hard to know for certain, because I had only known him for two weeks, meeting for only two hours a week, so I could not be sure. Nonetheless, I told him to work on pronunciation, and I showed him minimal pairs again, and had him practice with word beginning with V and F. This session was very short, maybe thirty to forty minutes, he had shown up late and left early. Our conversation took up most of our time there, so we did not get much practice in.
