Topic/Skill: Speaking, Working on Class Presentations

Teacher Presentation: Mr. Flemming went over the agenda for the day and asked if students had any questions. He began class with 5 discussion questions and put students in groups of 3 for warm-up conversations. He then provided a sample of the presentation his students will be giving in the upcoming weeks. He gave students a quiz over the order of ideas. Finally, he gave students class time to work on their presentations, ask him questions, and record first drafts of their presentations.

Classroom Management: Because it was a speaking class, Mr. Flemming spent much of the class time facilitating discussion and ensuring that students understood the expectations of their upcoming presentations.

Materials: Access to Zoom, Canvas, and overhead projector. His students brought their laptops to work on their presentations during class.

Student Participation: The class structure was definitely student-centered. Students spent time discussing conversation starters provided by Mr. Flemming. They also used class time to clarify presentation requirements with Mr. Flemming and to record rough drafts of their presentations.

Feedback Provided: Mr. Flemming walked around and helped facilitate warm-up conversations for each group. He also provided each student with individualized feedback on their class presentations.

Lessons on teaching you learned: During the class discussions, Mr. Flemming helped to facilitate, but he also stepped back when students were leading the conversation. This made the classroom feel student-centered and was a great approach for a speaking class. Providing a sample presentation and a quiz over the order of ideas encouraged students to think about the importance of ordering their ideas in a cohesive way when designing their presentation. Devoting class time to recording rough drafts also showed students that preparation and planning is a key part of the process for giving a presentation. This also gave students time to ask Mr. Flemming specific questions as they arose.
