Date/Time: Tuesday, September 7th at 1:00PM
Topic/Skill: Health, Skill
Teacher Presentation: Ms. McHarek went over the agenda of the day, which included schema-building reading activities about health and questions about the reading to guide small group discussion. Ms. McHarek also started the class by introducing an idiom of the day and discussed the idiom in context. She encouraged students to try the idiom in their own sentences, and gave feedback based on the sentences that students came up with.
Classroom Management: Ms. McHarek gave very clear instructions and told the students exactly how much time they had for each activity. Throughout speaking activities, Ms. McHarek walked around the room, facilitating and answering questions.
Materials: Students used a textbook for the reading activity and discussion questions. An overhead projector was also used.
Student Participation: Ms. McHarek put the students into small groups, which allowed for more speaking practice for each student. After the end of each small group discussion, Ms. McHarek encouraged students to share in a short whole class discussion.
Feedback Provided: When students learned the day’s idiom, “crossed paths,” a few of them misunderstood the context surrounding the phrase. Ms. McHarek corrected the students by giving examples of scenarios when one would use this phrase.
Lessons on teaching you learned: I want to start my classes with an idiom-of-the-day! It’s very fun and helps build confidence for beginners. Plus, it helps ELLs understand the importance of context when learning vocabulary. Ms. McHarek was also very clear and concise when giving directions, which optimized class time for students to have speaking practice.
